Kinect to 3D print

Designbestanden

Machines

I happened to stumble across this tweet earlier pointing to a post about Mac OSX software for using Kinect to scan directly 3D-printable objects. Unfortunately it only came recompiled for OSX (I prefer Linux) so we made use of the Macs present at the lab. (taking the time to work this out on Ubuntu too would be nice, but maybe later...)

The procedure is simple enough:

-download the app
-unzip/install and run
-connect your Kinect

At this point, you can play with the settings such as distance of the plane Kinect will scan, height and width of the scanning area etc. One trick that might help making better models is to use the "cut the back plane" (says Joris). Clicking the exportStl button saves the STL under /data/ directory where you installed the app.

Open the resulting STL file in Skeinforge and let it make the gcode (this may take a while, calculating fills etc). Proceed to print as usual - we used one of the lab Ultimakers.

Provided we have Macs around during open inloops, you're most welcome to scan & print yourself too.
